THE SEASIDE
How important were the natural features of the sea and sand in creating and maintaining the popularity of the seaside resorts?

Whilst sitting on a huge boulder that was on the beach, looking out at the sea with the sunrise glistening off of it, the crest of the waves turning white and finally crashing on to the beach and fizzling out where we sat, I turned to my then girlfriend and said “I want to live here, by the sea”. Within two months we had moved, lock stock and barrel and were living by the sea. After another few months by the sea, and with winter coming, we packed up again and went off to some of the best beaches in the world, backpacking for a year. We also have a fascination with the sea and what lives in it, wondrous creatures that are real and in some cases not real, Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues under the sea and Jaws spring to mind, we find ourselves at the water’s edge looking in and wondering what is below the surface. This is an important aspect of our connection with the sea, curiosity. Mysterious and unchartered, the sea held and still holds secrets that man has long been searching for, tall tales off sea creatures and buried treasure, shipwrecks and storms and the fish that got away, the dramatic sea and the calm sea, you never know which one you are going to get. There have been many additions to the seaside over the years as man has developed and taste has changed, fashion has moved on and our thirst for ever bigger and ever more exciting things has driven the seafront all over the world to change to suit our own needs when visiting the seaside. Depending on what type of seaside holiday you want, there is something for everyone. The typical seaside scene in Britain is funfairs, amusements and “kiss me quick” hats, fish and chips and naughty postcards, but it was not always like that.
