The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the April 2015 Nepal earthquakes were two of the most devastating and destructive earthquakes in history. The two natural disasters were very similar in the way they had prepared beforehand, responded immediately after and the aftermath and destruction caused from each shakedown. While they were similar on many counts, they also differed in varying ways.

The San Francisco earthquake in 1906 struck on April 18th and was a milestone in earthquake research. This earthquake had a magnitude of about 8.0, but that is averaging out the three magnitudes that scientists have recently created, since there was such little data from 1906 to give an accurate measurement. In this earthquake, it affected 296 miles across the coast of Los Angeles to the top of California. Over 3,000 casualties had occurred with about 225,000 people displaced, and 28,000 buildings were destroyed during the quake. While this earthquake gave scientific research about earthquakes to scientists, it still caused a lot of havoc before the research was discovered. Along with the earthquake, wildfires occurred after the pipelines snapped from the earthquake’s intensity. And this earthquake caused $400 million in economic loss which is about $11 billion in modern day currency.
