Earthquakes
Introduction
In this week’s assignment, we are asked to go to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) site on Earthquake Hazards and conduct research on earthquakes that had occurred over a seven day period and answer a few questions. First how many earthquakes occurred with a magnitude of greater than 6.0 and how many 4.5 – 6.0 occurred over the week? Second what country outside the U.S. had the most earthquakes over this period? Third where was the most recent earthquake over 4.5, what magnitude was it, how deep was it, and was this shallow, intermediate, or deep? Fourth, explain the type of plate boundary the earthquake from the third question was near and why are earthquakes common to this area? Fifth where was the deepest and the shallowest earthquakes and the type of boundary were these on? Finally where was the most recent earthquake to where I live and what type of plate boundary was this earthquake near?
How Many Earthquakes? Before I answer the first question of how many magnitude of 6.0 or greater and how many 4.5 – 6.0 earthquakes occurred let me tell you the time period I used to collect the data for this paper. The seven day period that was used in this paper is 10 Oct 20014 18:32 UTC till 20 Oct 2014 16:18 UTC. For this time period there were only two earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or greater. There was a 6.1 magnitude south of the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand on 13 Oct 2014 (USGS, 2014). The second earthquake was 7.3 magnitude 67km of…
