The purpose of this essay is to delve into the illegal world of sex trafficking in Nepal and to get a better understanding of the criminal and health issues involved. Human trafficking is an organized criminal industry and “is tied with the illegal arms industry as the second largest criminal industry in the world today, and it is the fastest-growing” after drug dealing (Viamonte, 2008). Human trafficking is also a global public health issue. The question is whether it is more of a criminal problem or a health problem.
Nepal is considered to have one of the largest sex trades in the world. Sex trafficking is rampant in Nepal due to its ranking as one of the poorest countries in the world. It is estimated that about 5,000 to 7,000 Nepali girls and women are trafficked each year, and about 200,000 Nepali girls and women are currently working in Indian brothels (Crawford & Kaufman, 2008). Many of the Nepali girls forced into labor are barely 9 or 10 years old (Hughes, 2011). Oftentimes the girls and women are sold by parents or their husbands for measly amounts of money, “Parents sell their daughters and husbands get rid of their young unwanted wives for US$200 to $600” (Hughes, 2011). The amount that some of the victims are sold for is demeaning. Woman with better looks are often sold for slightly more money. Women and girls are not the only victims of human trafficking.
