The United States of America is one of many countries that is heavily dependent on electricity. Without electricity, just about every sector, including the medical and finance sectors, will fail.
“Presidential Policy Directive 21 identifies the Energy Sector as uniquely critical because it provides an “enabling function” across all critical infrastructure sectors. More than 80 percent of the country 's energy infrastructure is owned by the private sector, supplying fuels to the transportation industry, electricity to households and businesses, and other sources of energy that are integral to growth and production across the nation”( http://www.dhs.gov/energy-sector).
In addition, the Department of Homeland Security states that, “The United States electricity segment contains more than 6,413 power plants. Of these 6,413 plants, 3,273 are traditional electric utilities and 1,738 are nonutility power producers”(http://www.dhs.gov/energy-sector). With 6,413 power generating plants around the United States questions begin to arise on how to protect this valuable resource from both manmade threats like criminal acts to natural disasters like lighting, tornados, earthquakes even solar flares.
