There are many hazards that are associated by earthquakes which include; ground motion- which is shaking of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves, faulting and ground rupture- generally occurs only along the fault zone that moves during the earthquake, aftershocks- are smaller earthquakes that occur after a main earthquake, fire- a secondary effect of earthquakes, landslides- secondary effects in mountainous regions subjected to earthquakes ground shaking may trigger landslides, rock and debris falls, rock and debris slides, slumps and debris avalanches, liquefaction- a process that occurs in water-saturated unconsolidated sediment due to shaking, changes in ground level- a secondary or tertiary effect that is caused by faulting, tsunami- a secondary effect that are giant ocean waves that can rapidly travel across oceans, flooding- a secondary effect that may occur due to rupture of human made dams and levees due to tsunami and a result of ground subsidence after an earthquake (Tulane University, 2013).

Earthquakes are caused when tension is released from the rocks in the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. This tension is due to friction between what scientists believe are large ‘plates’ floating on magma on the Earth’s surface.
