The day was August 24th, I had woken up at 5 o’clock in the morning to prepare myself for the inevitable drawdown that I would experience at 9:30. I was long biased in a volatile market. I had over 30% of my portfolio allocated into call option contracts that were going to expire in two weeks. Fast forwarding to the event, just in case I am already confusing you, two minutes past 9:30 a.m. I lost $800, or 13.5% of my portfolio. This was the first significant drawdown I experienced since trading over the past year. Reflecting back on my novice self, I was in the most unstable, irrational state ever since I had been investing. There was plenty of signs to get out of my long position and to go short or long volatility, however, I was suffering from confirmation bias. Immediately after closing out of my trading positions, I began to question my asinine actions. I began to question my existence, it felt as if the thousands of hours of market study had been burned and shredded in minutes. I wanted to do anything but stare at my quote screen, even if that meant joining a nomadic hunting/gathering tribe in Africa or South America. After calming down, I realized I was had no control of my emotions, so I thought it would be best to step away for a few days. Since my trading drawdown, many aspects of my life have changed, some positive, others negative. Several messages, both indirect and direct, influenced how I perceive myself.
