Life, Death and Hope in a Port Au Prince Undercity Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity is a novel based on the residents of Annawadi, an overcrowded, squalid slum near Mumbai, India. Annawadi has a population of about 4,000, but it is very densely populated. It has a high unemployment rate, unsanitary conditions, little access to clean water or electricity, and an unfathomable level of poverty. Behind the Beautiful Forevers is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Katherine Boo who has won several awards. Boo mainly talks about Abdul Hussain, a teenage boy who is the main source of income for his family. Abdul started a trash recycling business that gave the Hussains the money they needed to survive. They reached a level of success that was hard to come by in Annawadi; this led to their neighbors to do violent actions as a result of jealousy. Annawadi has a high crime rate and a poor, corrupt justice system. It is overall a horrible, hopeless place. Cité Soleil is located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area of Haiti; it is a violent, densely populated slum with a high unemployment rate, and unsanitary conditions.
