How easy is it to become disheartened or weary about praying? If we’re honest with ourselves, it’s pretty easy especially when our prayers seem to go unanswered. There are other frustrations such as unexpected distractions while trying to pray. How often do our prayers go without distractions? If we are luck, we may last several minutes before something pops into our head that we forgot to do or need to do. What other tangents do our minds go off on? We catch ourselves and try to go back to prayer only to be distracted again. And, again! Isn’t it funny to think that other Christians, especially pastors and missionaries, don’t have the same problem? After several more minutes, we get to the point that we just give up. Does this make us a “bad” Christian? When Peter stepped out of the boat, he was focused on Jesus. All of a sudden, his mind starting thinking about the things around him and his focus was taken off Jesus. Don’t we do the same things? As he took his focus off Jesus, Jesus never took His focus off Peter. Prayer is the same way. We may take our focus off Jesus, but Jesus never takes His focus off him. Paul told the Thessalonians that “the Lord is faithful, Who shall establish you, and guard you from the evil one.” This is important because our “adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” The Greek word for devour is katapinō which means “to swallow up.” Satan is ready to devour us physically, spiritually…
