Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like oneself who makes the choice to donate. When one makes a blood donation, they are joining a very select group. Currently only three out of every one hundred people in America donate blood. From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong, and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. Right now the Red Cross urgently needs Type O negative blood for the victims. Type O blood is the only universal blood that can be given to anyone. According to reports, as many as three million people may have been affected by this quake, if not more. This earthquake collapsed government buildings and caused major damage to the hospitals in this area. Point blank, Haiti earthquake victims need your help. Why not do just something as little as taking up sixty minutes of your life to donate blood, and save 3 lives? Third, there are many people just like us that are in need of someone’s blood. According to HealthNews.com, the American Association of Blood Banks says that “1 out of every 7 people entering a hospital will need blood.” This website also states that, “people with severe sickle cell disease must receive a blood transfusion every week in order to stay alive.” A blood donation truly is a “gift of life”. A healthy individual can give to others in their community who are sick or injured and need blood in order to live. In our hour’s time, a person can donate one unity of blood that can be separated into four individual components that could help save multiple lives. That is a lot of blood needed. For simply donating one hour of one’s time to donate blood to a donor bank, they can help save the life of more than one fellow human being.
