Animal testing is conducted to determine the safety of medical products. Many problems arise with the testing of various animals. Different opinions have been offered relating to this topic. Supporters argue that animal testing provides extensive medical research, saves valuable human lives, and is regulated. Opponents say that animal testing causes torture and suffering to the animals, animal results are not always reliable, and it is very expensive and wasteful. Both side have their controversial opinions. Early greek, arab and roman physicians performed experiments on live animals in 129 to 217 AD.Galen , “A greek Physician frequently practiced animal testing to advance the understanding of anatomy, pathology, physiology, and pharmacology”(Hajar 1).Similarly, an arab physician conducted animal experiments for testing surgical procedures before applying them on human patients(Hajar 1). In addition , “Roger W. sperry found that the nerves connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain could be severed without causing an drastic changes in the experimented monkeys”(Scutti 2). “In the 17th Century with Harvey’s experiments on numerous animal species aiming to demonstrate blood circulation. Across Europe, the use of animals in scientific research began to expand over the 19th Century, in part supported by the development of anaesthetics which had previously made animal research impossible”(“History” np).
